Glyn Evans Will Teach You Safe Driving for Life

Theory Test & Hazard Perception

The Theory test for car drivers and motorcyclists was introduced by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) in July 1996.

It is designed to improve the safety of newly qualified drives and riders by making them think carefully about the right attitudes needed to drive safely on today’s busy roads and reduce the risk of accidents.

You’ll take your theory test on a computer at one of the local DVSA  centres in your area. You will have to answer 50 multiple choice questions and have to gain a minimum of 43 out of the 50 questions to pass. The test is available in both English and Welsh. There is also the option of using British sign language for those candidates who are deaf.

In November 2002 the theory test was changed, in addition to answering 50 multiple choice questions you are also tested for hazard awareness perception skills. You will sit this part of the test on completion of your theory test. You will need to pass both elements at the same sitting to pass your theory test.

On completing the theory test you will have a break of up to three minutes before the start of your hazard perception test. Firstly you will be shown a short tutorial video clip about how the hazard perception test works. You will then be shown a series of 14 video clips which feature everyday road sense. In each clip their will be at least one developing hazard.

To achieve a high score you must respond in the early stages of the hazard developing by clicking the mouse button.

The pass mark for the hazard perception test is 44 out of a possible 75. Once you have completed the test you may leave the examination room. On leaving the room you cannot enter again.

The current cost for the theory test and hazard perception is £23.00.

Driving Test

The driving test was initially introduced in the UK in 1935. During the intervening years several amendments have been made to keep the test up to date and make it more relevant to producing drivers capable of being safe road users in the 21st century.

The test will include an eye sight test. You will then be asked two ‘show me, tell me’ questions, which can be found on YouTube. A standard driving test will take around 40 minutes to complete, during which you will be asked to do one reversing manoeuvre, and you may be asked to perform an emergency stop.

For approx 20 mins you will be asked to drive independently either following road signs or a sat nav.

During the test the examiner will give you directions which you should follow. Test routes are designed to be as uniform as possible and will include a range of typical road and traffic conditions.

During the test you should drive as your instructor has taught you. If you make any mistakes don’t worry about it, it might be a less than a serious driving fault and may not affect your result. You can make up to 15 driving faults and still pass the test. (16 or more will result in failure). However if you commit one serious or dangerous fault you will fail the test.

The current cost of the practical test is £62.00.
